Renaissance City Choirs
Gays and lesbians creating change through the power of music
The Renaissance City Choir (RCC) is a non-profit organization
working to culturally enrich audiences through choral music while educating
them about the GLBT community. The members of the Renaissance City
Men’s
Choir (formed 1985), and the Renaissance City Women’s Choir (founded
1995), have raised their voices to create change through the power
of
music. (View the RCC Timeline)
As the Pittsburgh area’s only primarily gay and lesbian choral
group, the men’s and women’s
choirs, under the direction of Andres Cladera, also seek to foster
a sense of spirit and
pride within the GLBT community.
The concert season for RCC includes the annual Holiday Concert,
the Spring Concerts, and a performance at Pittsburgh Pride Festival.
RCC are proud members of the Choirs-in-Residence
program at East Liberty Presbyterian Church (ELPC). As such, a scholarship
fund has been developed through ELPC to assist members of the surrounding
community in pursuit of their art.
RCC not only creates opportunities for cultural enrichment and community
outreach, but also empowers its members to act as a vehicle for change.
By challenging society’s attitudes and misperceptions, and by
working to break commonly held beliefs and stereotypes, the Renaissance
City Choir plays an important role in the development of a positive
image of gays and lesbians.
RCC’s members represent a broad spectrum of peoples from every
age, cultural, ethnic, religious, and socioeconomic background. Our
diversity, our love of music, and our desire to provide a positive role
model for the community at large – both straight and gay –
are the basic strengths that have helped the RCC remain a vital, dynamic
force for change.
